Outside of not sharing combs and jackets/jacket hooks or lockers, I don’t believe there is much you can do to prevent lice. I used to always use tea tree oil shampoo for dandruff when I was a kid and I always got lice. Lice actually prefer clean hair over dirty hair. What makes them choose one person over another is beyond me. I know when I was in school if there was one louse, that thing would find me first. UGH… I hated that, so embarrassing.

i get head lice alot, im not sure why. but i used mayonaise. leave that in for about two hours with a shower cap on, and that works.

Head lice is quite common among school age children. I put a few drops of tea tree oil in my children’s hair to prevent infestation while they are attending school. Also you can put quite a few drops in your child’s hair with shampoo…leave in for at least 10 mins and use a fine tooth comb to get eggs and lice out.
Repeat after a few days and check every day to ensure they are gone. The tea tree oil is toxic to lice and you will not have the bad side effects like that of the over the counter products.

You can’t "prevent" it. The only thing you can do is during outbreaks around the school, put your daughter’s hair up in a tight pony tail or bun. To get rid of it, lay her head back in the sink, cover her face with a towel and pour rubbing alcohol throughout her hair soaking it. Rub it through for a minute or two and rinse thoroughly. It will kill the bugs and the eggs. Nix, Rid and all of that other stuff does not work on the first try. Alcohol does.

It’s extremely difficult to prevent head lice with anything if you have kids in school. The best thing you can do is rush to get rid of them once you get them and to let the school know of your displeasure that this situation wasn’t caught sooner. Someone else’s kid must have been scratching their head a long time to have been able to give it to your kid.
As for what to do now? The standard products are going to be necessary, of course. The shampoo should be used on everyone in your house. There is a furniture spray you need to get and spray on everything that can’t be washed in the washer…including your car. Everything that you can put in the washer, put it in on the hottest water that you can without ruining it, even stuffed animals. If there are things that can’t go in hot water, wash them as best as you can, spray them and then seal them in garbage bags for at least a month. To help get the lice off of your heads, a week after the first shampoo, probably on the weekend, use baby oil on all of your scalps and wrap it with a head scarf or bandana overnight. Next morning, wash all of the oil out and blow dry your hair on the hottest setting you can stand, but be careful not to burn your daughter, using your own hand near the hot air to judge if its getting too hot.
Also, there is a comb out there that is electronic. It is made to kill lice and eggs on contact while combing them out of the hair. It may be hard to find, but worth looking into.
All I’ve heard about tea tree oil is that it’s good for acne, but I found the smell hard to bear, like kerosene. Stands to reason it might help you get rid of lice, but I’ve not heard any proof of that.
Good luck with all of this and hang in there. Sooner or later, most parents have to go through this kind of thing.
