You should not ‘burn’ essential oils. They are ineffective when combusted. If you are using a duft-lamp, you will need to add water to the reservoir to keep the oils from burning. A duft-lamp is usually glazed ceramic, a bowl or well is placed above a votive candle or a low watt bulb. The heat disperses the essential oils into the air.

You do not need to water it down.
Good oils for depression are: All citrus, chamomile, cypress, geranium, lavender, neroli, frankincense, sandalwood, juniper, marjoram, patchouli, rose, clary sage, ylang-ylang, cedarwood, basil, bergamot and coriander.
They work best for different things- if your depression has a component of anger, then ylang-ylang is best. If it’s a general feeling of ennui, with no obvious causation, then citrus is probably the way to go. If it has anything to do with a failed relationship, something with rose would be quite helpful.
I also find that it needs to be something you LIKE. If it smells bad to you, it’s unlikely to have the effect you’re looking for.
Good luck.

Whether or not you need to dilute it with water depends on the type of diffuser you use. If you use candles or a light bulb as the heat source, you definitely need to mix it with water. It is not just for a long-lasting scent, but also for keeping the diffuser below the temperature at which the oil starts burning.
For treatment with depression, you can try Clary Sage, Lavender, Sandalwood, Neroli, Geranium, Melisa Leaf, Bergamot and Ylang Ylang.
