It won’t work. Even it if did would you be saving money? Probably not to get, in some cases, just a small amount of oil take pounds upon pounds of a particular product. Taking in your time and effort would it be worth it?

The liquid that you contain and cool is the steam. If you can capture the steam I suppose that you could end with something neat. Humidifiers don’t heat the entire reservoir of water, only the water between the elements is heated to steam. To produce any essential oil you need to process bushels and bushels of plant material.
